Interviewed on Trapartisan Radio ep. 5

I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Carl Abrahamsson on Trapartisan Radio recently! Which is available on spotify together with the Rendering Unconscious podcast hosted by Dr. Vanessa Sinclair. It’s one of my favorite podcasts and recently celebrated 200 episodes! Definitely check it out and support it on Patreon!

I wanted to take the opportunity to expand a bit on some of the topics touched upon in the interview. First of all, the wonderful books by Jeff Vandermeer. I had a good laugh with myself when I listened to this again and realized I described his worlds as populated with humans. I mean “humans(?)” of course. That’s one of my favorite aspects of his work, the way he demolishes all constructed and perceived borders between human and non-human. Problematizes it in really interesting ways and thoroughly examines ideas of personhood. Hollywood didn’t get it, I strongly dislike the movie Annihilation, by the otherwise stellar Alex Garland, because it is such a lame take on an extraordinary book, but I’m still indebted to it for helping me find his work. Thankfully I read the books before I saw the movie, although the movie is so far removed it doesn’t spoil much. My favorite of them all is The Strange Bird, a follow up to Borne.

And it feels so lacking to just talk about beautiful images without showing! So here is an example of the incredible mark making in Jim Holdaway’s version of Modesty Blaise. Written by Peter O’Donnell. This comic has not aged great in parts, but it’s extraordinary in many ways and very worth checking out. I wish someone would make a serious attempt at a good, contemporary movie based of it. There’s a fantastically weird movie from the sixties though (it’s very bad, sometimes offensively and sometimes brilliantly). I love it as a trippy b-movie but it has very little to do with the actual comic.

Another influence when it comes to incredible ink lines but also painting in general, which came later in my life, is Jeffrey Catherine Jones. An absolutely incredible artist who did both comics and fine art. I was lucky enough to find vintage collectable cards with her art at a sci-fi convention once, back when the vendors still stocked a more eclectic selection. Below are some of my favorites from those packs.

And the exciting events on the horizon of course! First up is my presentation at:

VISIONARY MEDIUM: Psychoanalysis and the Magic of Cinema

October 14-16, 2022 | Husets Biograf, Copenhagen

Caligula as a Dionysian Affirmation of Life! It’s gonna be great, a celebration of art and life in all it’s messy, complex, paradoxical glory! I would like to highlight the place where I first saw the movie itself, which is the fantastic Girls, Guts & Giallo, a podcast and live screening series on subversive films hosted by lesbian vampire Annie Rose Malamet. She creates space for difficult media to be explored and appreciated in a non-violent, open minded and curious setting.

Right after that I’m heading to Reading, PA, on October 19-23 to attend the main show at Illuxcon, or IX art show. I’m very proud and glad to be included in this years main show, and look forward to bring my original works (as in physical paintings) for display there. But mostly it’s just amazing to get to go and reconnect with the wonderful artists there, some of whom are my former teachers and classmates from when I studied at what is now known as Visual Arts Passage. The best art education (in visual arts) that I could have found and I’m forever indebted to them for putting actual education first, as opposed to my more recent experiences. Anyway!

I hope you enjoyed the episode!
